Some guinea pigs aren’t interested in being the dominant pig, so they form friendships straight away. After Chanel and Grace had been sniffing and communicating with each other through the divider for two weeks, we felt it was time to introduce them. We found that Chanel and Grace wanted to determine their leadership positions as they both wanted to be the boss. For the first few days, Grace was bullying Chanel by humping and chasing her around the enclosure but thankfully no harm or distress occurred. Eventually, Grace understood that Chanel wasn’t interested in becoming the dominant guinea pig anymore and their bond started to form.
On a hot 40 degree day, Grace was the only guinea pig available for adoption at RSPCA Yagoona. At first, we couldn’t spot her in her enclosure as she was so small. When we finally met, she greeted me with a kiss and enjoyed some fresh kale.
Make sure that you give your guinea pigs fresh veggies today, not chocolate!
When introducing guinea pigs for the first time (after their two week quarantine period), it is best to introduce them in an area where they haven’t been before. Include a secure separation divider so that they cannot harm one another. We stuck food through the divider so that they would get used to sharing and each others’ smell. They were extremely curious of each other during this time.
It is very important that you check your guinea pig supplies before the Easter weekend! Make sure that you have plenty of hay, veggies, pellets and bedding before all the shops close!
